NEWS | 10-03-2021

The pieces selected in the first stage will compete for prizes with a prize pool of PLN 100,000. We would like to invite you to the free premiere of the concert on Friday, March 19th at 7.00 p.m. on the Philharmonic Facebook and YouTube channels.
The competition was open to the composers of all nationalities, with no age restrictions. They were asked to create a composition for a symphony orchestra, lasting from 9 to 12 minutes. Only original works, previously unpublished and performed and not awarded at other competitions, could have been submitted to the competition.

The jury chaired by Professor Marcin Błażewicz have taken into consideration 176 works from Argentina, Austria, Belarus, Brazil, China, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, South Korea, Macedonia, Germany, Poland, Sweden, USA, Great Britain and Italian.

There are 6 songs qualified for the finals:

  • Tomas Peire-Serrate – „Borealis”
  • Andrzej Szachowski – „Helix Nebula”
  • Adam Porębski – „Iluzje”
  • Tomasz Szczepanik – „rumori”
  • Claudio Passilongo – „Symphonic Dystopia”
  • Jin Seok Choi – „Sunrise in Hyangil Am”

The premiere performances of the pieces will be played during the concert on March 19th, 2021. They will be performed by the Symphony Orchestra of the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic conducted by Szymon Bywalec. Only after hearing the premieres, the jury will decide on the final verdict and announce the results. The expected prize for the 1st place is PLN 50,000, for the 2nd place – PLN 30,000, for the 3rd place – PLN 20,000. Additionally, the Audience Award (SMS and online voting *) and the Orchestra Award will be given.

The final concert of the competition can be watched free of charge on the Philharmonic's Facebook and YouTube channels on March 19th, on Friday at 7 PM.

It is no coincidence that it is the Philharmonic in Szczecin, together with ZAiKS, that creates a new brand, which is the International Composers' Competition. The bold space of the Philharmonic justifies offering the audience a fully contemporary repertoire. The international audience watching the concert online will be involved in selecting their favorite. After the concert, viewers will be able to choose the best song, in their opinion, via internet voting and text messages.

I hope that the pieces created thanks to our competition will enter the repertoire of philharmonics in Poland and abroad. I am happy to invite you to listen to the final concert – said Miłosz Bembinow, vice-president of ZAiKS and the originator of the competition.

ZAiKS and the Philharmonic in Szczecin are organizing a composition competition together for the second time. The first, as a competition for the centenary of ZAiKS, without a patron at that time, was held in 2018. The high level of the submitted works inspired both institutions to continue this unique musical undertaking, which is to take place regularly every two years.
